Did you ever lock the car or switch off the cooker and later wonder to yourself if you had actually done just that? Well, I have many a time. I find it’s a good idea to say to myself ‘I am switching off the cooker,’ ‘I am locking the door’ as I do the task.
In Sunday’s first reading, God tells Moses his name ‘I Am who I Am’. His name is not I was or I will be but is God of the present moment. ‘I Am’. We are all invited to live in the moment, to let go of the luggage of the past, to live an original life just as Jesus did.
Christianity is meant to lead us into freedom, not to keep us bound up. Christ did not imitate anyone. He was a revolutionary person. To realise this all we need do is read or listen to the Gospel, the beatitudes, the parables as in today’s story of the fig tree.
Listen to or read his words or about the things he did.
How much of my life do I live in an original way? Do I grow a little on my spiritual journey each day? Do I give any time to focus inwardly, to focus on the great ‘I Am’. Without the ‘I Am’ I can do nothing. I am nothing of myself Indeed I can’t even switch off the cooker or lock the car without the great ‘I am who I Am’ living in me.
