We might wonder what it was like for Jesus when John baptised Him, when He heard the voice from the heavens call Him “the beloved”. He must have felt a surge of tenderness wash over Him. A strong assuring conviction of His relationship with His Father God must have become firmly stored in His inner being at that time.
Jesus felt this power again and again in His life as he came forth from the desert, as He healed the sick, as He spent nights alone in prayer, as He stood up for His beliefs, as He communicated with His friends, as he walked the road to Calvary.
Hopefully we too feel the effects of our own baptism time and again; maybe when we gather with our Parish community for prayer; or when someone indicates to us that our words and acts of kindness make a difference in their lives; or when we are out walking in the beauty of nature and we sense a power greater than ourselves. We sometimes feel this power when we feel a nudge inside us to be a
better person or to do something to alleviate the pain of others. Maybe it’s when we have plunged into the depths of our human experience and discovered the comforting love of God and the assurance that we are indeed God’s beloved ones. Holy Spirit, I celebrate your life in me; your power filled me at my baptism and continues to stir within me to day.
May I be forever aware of this power for good that daily lives within me. May I never cease to be amazed that my God could say to me:
“You are my son, my daughter, my beloved one.”
