A young couple, Marian & Robert moved into a new neighbourhood. The next morning while they were eating breakfast, Marian saw her neighbour hang the washing outside. “That laundry is not very clean”, Marian said. “She doesn’t know how to wash properly. Perhaps she needs to change her washing powder.” Robert looked on but remained silent. Every time her neighbour would hang out her washing to dry, Marian would make the same comments. About a month later, Marian was surprised to see a nice, clean washing on the line and said to Robert, “Look, she has learned to wash correctly at last. She must have changed her washing powder.” Robert said, “No, she didn’t change anything. I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.”
Do you see yourself in that story?? What needs a bit of cleaning in my life at the moment? Do we unfairly pass judgements on other people while failing to see our own weaknesses? Are there some characteristics of the Pharisee in my life too? Maybe I need to go to some ‘spiritual specsavers!
