I remember the times we had retreats in secondary school and weren’t they only wonderful – with beautiful hymns, inspiring talks, discussions and prayers. We were invited to bring what we experienced out into the everyday world.
Well in today’s Gospel Peter says to Jesus ‘Master it is wonderful for us to be here. He is referring to the ‘mountain top’
experience that the disciples had – a preview of the Risen Christ. Lent is a time of renewal, a time to make new our hearts and minds, a time to go up the mountain to pray as Jesus and the disciples did.
We too can get a glimpse of Heaven and this glimpse can keep us going during difficult times. We can bring Heaven into the lives of others by accepting them just as they are. So often we want to change others telling them what they should do. Jesus accepts each of us totally just as we are, just now, each one so different, so unique.
‘Master, it is wonderful for us to be here’ Perhaps we can say these words when we attend the Eucharist. Yes Lord it is wonderful for us to be here…and my Grandmother often commented on how much nicer I was during the days of the school retreats. A.S.
