A woman I knew called Sheila often spoke of how she wouldn’t be able to cope when her elderly mother died. She thought she would never be able to survive it.
In our gospel today Jesus says “A man’s life is not made secure by what he owns even when he has more than he needs” Many people have collections of maybe shoes, clothes, magazines, papers … whatever… things that maybe create clutter in their homes and lives, preventing a flow of life giving energy.
Today’s parable tells of the rich man who decided to build bigger barns to store excess grain and all his goods in them but God said “This very night the demand will be made for your soul”. All we have is one moment at a time, one breath at a time. This one breath is a gift from God. We have done noth-ing to earn it. We have to let go the last breath to take the next one. Today’s parable invites us to let go. I have plenty.
So many things in our world are empty and do not enrich our lives.
We cannot find fulfilment in these empty things so the search goes on….And after all the worrying Sheila herself was taken home to heaven before her mother…..
“Make us know the shortness of our life that we may
gain wisdom of heart “ AS

Most people belong to some sort of an organisation or group that enriches their lives such as the GAA, ICA, Macra na Feirme, Tidy Towns or whatever. Many people may also belong to a religious group also enriching their lives.

Now Jesus came not to start a new religion but to liberate people from any bonds that prevent them from being their true selves. Jesus himself was Jewish and his life’s journey led him to realise he was the Son of God. He realised this for all of us. He was like a go between for humanity and the Father. He eventually realised not just that he was the Son of God but that he was God.

So we look to our scriptures for the Spiritual guidance which comes from Jesus life and teachings. Today he teaches us how to pray just as he taught his disciples and so we have the Our Father. Today’s Gospel tells us ‘ask and it will be given to you’ and our Responsorial Psalm says ‘On the day I called you answered me O Lord’. Many people I know talk to God as they go about their daily lives and isn’t it wonderful. Yes we are all invited to do this, to realise that Jesus is my Light, my Help, my Rock, my Refuge. Call on him often.

Lead me, guide me in your way Lord, no matter where I am, be it in the GAA or ICA….Pray without ceasing. A.S.
