The Pope John Paul II Award helps young people get involved in the life of their local parish and community. It is for those in senior cycle of school or for school leavers aged 16 and over. Through the award young people are encouraged to play an active role in their local Church and society. An earthquake struck Haiti killing hundreds of thousands. In calling on “the generosity of all people”, Pope Benedict XVI stated that “the Catholic Church will not fail to move immediately, through her charitable institutions, to meet the most immediate needs of the population”. Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland and they have launched an appeal to help the people of Haiti.
